Healing is Possible
Why People Experience Depression After Abortion
Terminating a pregnancy is a stressful experience that can cause significant internal turmoil. While it’s possible you will recover from these feelings over time, many people experience them over long periods. If these negative feelings are severe and remain over a long time, they could be signs of depression.
Why does this happen? The mystery of depression still isn’t understood, but it’s believed to be related to an imbalance in the body’s hormones and brain chemicals. This imbalance leads to changes in emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
An abortion can trigger depression in different ways. First, the rush of hormones that accompanies pregnancy lead to changes in brain chemistry as well. When a pregnancy is aborted, these hormones are suddenly cut off. These rapid changes could contribute to the feelings of depression.
Other people experience post-abortion depression that is more similar to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. These people suffer both from feelings of depression along with acute emotional symptoms like anxiety, stress, anger and fear.
How to Recover from Depression After Abortion
One of the difficult things about diagnosing depression after an abortion is that every person experiences depression differently. Many people with depression have some common symptoms, but the effect of depression is different for every person who goes through it. This also makes recovery more complicated.
One way to start the recovery process is to participate in group healing sessions. Through group healing, you can get support and care from others who have similar stories in a safe, comfortable, and confidential environment.
